It is with great pleasure that we can invite you to visit North Shore Academy to hear about the incredible journey from Requires Improvement to Outstanding in less than three years.

Awarded Outstanding in every category in July 2021, we are very happy to share with you information about the school improvement strategy the Trust has implemented, which enabled the achievement of this result.

We have arranged a number of access days, where the Chief Executive of Northern Education Trust, the Executive Principal and Principal of North Shore Academy will be available, along with students and staff, to provide information, answer questions, and show participants around this wonderful academy.

These access events will give you unprecedented access to see our strategies and initiatives being employed “live” in the academy.

Visits are available on the following dates:

We are pleased to announce that we have recruited 20 Initial Teacher Trainees (ITTs) to start in our academies in September 2021.  The ITTs have been recruited through UCAS and the DfE website, Apply, and cover a broad range of secondary subjects as well as primary.

In partnership with Educate Teacher Training, a nationally recognised, DfE accredited training provider, with whom we have worked for over 15 years, and Leeds Beckett University, we offer a School Direct programme that is designed to develop and support our ITTs to be the best teacher they can be. All of our courses result in a PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Applications for September 2022 will open in October 2021 when we hope to recruit even more ITTs for next year!

As part of my NQT (newly qualified teacher) training with Northern Education Trust this academic year, I have been lucky enough to take part in the pilot Teach First Early Career Framework (ECF) programme. This programme has been designed, in line with guidance and quality assurance from the Department for Education, to provide extra support and training for teachers in their NQT and RQT (recently qualified teacher) years.

The programme is made up of two years, each one consisting of six core modules which are delivered across the course of each half term. Whilst this sounds like quite a commitment, as a participant you are granted some level of flexibility in terms of how and when you interact with the resources provided.

The majority of the training is in the form of independent study of the resources online, which include articles and short videos delivered by expert practitioners, as well as key summaries of the content delivered and pre/post module quizzes to assess knowledge acquired. As a result, you can choose to complete a module either in small increments over each half-term, or condense your study hours into 1-2 sessions, depending on what suits you best.

During the second week of each module I have targets for development that are set with my mentor, based on the relevant material. Module 1, for example, dealt with creating effective learning environments and this encouraged me to set a target on providing precise praise in my lessons. This not only helped me improve levels of student motivation in lessons, but it allowed me to focus on how precise praise was being used in other lessons during observations, and appreciate the impact of the praise culture in our academies.

There are two compulsory seminars to attend each half-term, which focus on two key aspects of each module.  They provide you with an opportunity to discuss in detail with your peers (across different subject disciplines) how you may integrate part of the training provided into your practice in future.  For example, Module 4 focused on feedback and assessment, and one seminar was centred on the design, implementation and use of hinge questions. It was really useful to speak about how hinge questions were used across different subjects and stages, and in particular, how to design them in a way which would not only collect rich data about knowledge acquired in a lesson, but also about any misconceptions that may still exist.

In summary, I have found that the ECF programme complements the existing infrastructure of support and training provided by Red House Academy, and has had a measurable impact on my practice, guided by the targets set. I look forward to engaging with the programme in my RQT year.

The NQT (newly qualified teacher) programme delivered by the Early Careers Framework (ECF) and supported by Northern Education Trust (NET) has enabled me to develop across many areas of my teaching, in a year which has presented many challenges for education. Having completed my Geography PGCE in unprecedented circumstances, the ECF programme has given me a supportive network to allow me to progress as an NQT.

Throughout the programme, the delivery and content of the modular units have been encouraging and helped progress both my pedagogical skills and professional development. In addition the training provided has focused on mental health and wellbeing, which I think has been especially important this academic year. I have found the seminars engaging and informative, especially when given the opportunity to share good practice with other NQTs. The confidence and skills gained from the programme and support from my mentor has allowed me to lead in the development of new KS3 Geography schemes of work. Planning lessons using a range of strategies and collaborative activities has been appreciated across the department and I have received good feedback from my colleagues.

One of my key targets last term was incorporating more literacy into my geography lessons to support students with their reading and writing skills. This was aided by the ideas and content supplied by Module 5 in the ECF programme. Disciplinary language is a focus of the curriculum and therefore has been embedded in all lesson structures. Introducing disciplinary language and engaging students with literacy in lessons has ensured students have access to higher level work. Another area I was keen to develop was increasing the progress of students through planning effective assessment. ECF seminars and content in Module 4 provided me with insights into effective use of hinge questions, formative assessment in the form of low stakes testing and giving purposeful feedback to encourage self-regulated learning.

As part of the development of my leadership skills, I have been very active in supporting and running extra-curricular activities. These have included developing activities for and leading the anti-bullying programme, allowing me to support the wider school ethos. Alongside the ECF, my mentor and the NQT programme at Thorp have been fundamental in developing both my confidence and skills as a teacher. The systems at NET have been instrumental in my development as an NQT. For example, the effective expectations for learning policy, stringent classroom routines, use of “need to know” books and termly STEP assessments have given me the opportunity to maximise my teaching abilities and fulfil all teaching standards. My classroom routines have also been supported by observations of other teachers and effective feedback in regular mentor meetings. The quality of feedback has always been of a high standard and extremely supportive, often giving praise for specific activities or events which have been observed in my teaching. Such positive feedback, as well as continued support by the ECF programme continues to motivate and maintain my determination to progress as a teacher.

Despite many obstacles faced by our trainees this year, we are determined to offer the most rewarding experience within and outside of our academies. Under normal circumstances, all ITT trainees would have completed their Contrasting School Placement during the STEP 3 half-term. To ensure that all trainees gain great insight into how our academies work together within the Northern Education Trust, the Contrasting School Placement has been rearranged and is taking place 07.06.21 – 18.06.21.

We are incredibly delighted to offer our trainees such an amazing opportunity to observe, and teach, within a range of academies and engage with teaching and learning across the Trust. As the placement coincides with the Trust-wide roll-up of timetables, the trainees will also experience a valuable opportunity to build relationships with new classes and employ strategies to ensure that our students have the best start to their new academic year groups. Not only this, but some of our trainees will have the opportunity to experience teaching in an alternative setting and we are thrilled to welcome trainees from outside of the Trust into our academies.

‘The encouragement, support, and opportunities to pursue my professional growth by the trust has allowed me to develop my progression from a Teaching Assistant, to a Learning Manager, Transition Lead and now my Initial Teacher Training. Alongside Educate, I have been supported every step of the way in transferring my skills from deep support to deep learning. The support they offer ITTs is second to none and I wouldn’t have wanted my training anywhere else.
