PARTICIPANT PROFILE: Callum Horridge (NET Dyke House Academy)
I completed my teacher training in 2019, and was fortunate enough to be appointed at NET Dyke House Academy. There is an overwhelmingly positive culture around CPD at the academy, and the English Subject Development Programme is definitely an example of this.
Although I’m an English graduate, I’m new to the profession, and welcome any opportunity to refine my skills in terms of craft and content.
I found the programme to be hugely enlightening: having discussions with my colleagues after the sessions really highlighted the fact that there is something there for everyone. The easy access and the high-quality delivery from knowledgeable and insightful speakers certainly help convey the key content, and sessions are clearly and concisely organised with both students and staff at heart.
On a personal note, I particularly enjoyed the session focussing on concepts and how they thread through the entire curriculum. Incorporating this into my practice has helped pupils become increasingly effective in building the links between texts and concepts.
Whereas Route 1 took a more holistic view, Route 2 seems to offer a more specific and more in-depth focus on subject areas, and it’s been a natural progression to continue onto it. As someone that isn’t new to the subject but is new to teaching, this offers a fantastic opportunity for further development, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
